Can Cataract Surgery Cause Dry Eyes?

Althouth unusual, cataract surgery can lead to dry eye syndrome, either by temporarily worsening pre-existing dry eye or by causing dryness to develop afresh. The incisions made during surgery can disrupt the balance of the tear film on the eye’s surface, leading to reduced tear production and stability due to surgically induced ocular inflammation and exposure to light. Modern cataracty surgery creates a very small incision (less than 2.5 mm).   Eye drops after surgery can mitigate or worsen dry eye symptoms.  Symptoms such as irritation, stinging, burning, redness, blurry vision, and a sensation of having grit in the eye are not uncommon. The symptoms are usually mild and temporary, with most patients experiencing relief within a few weeks to a couple of months after surgery. However, for some patients, especially those with pre-existing dry eye, the symptoms may persist for a longer period.

It’s important for individuals undergoing cataract surgery to be aware of the potential for developing dry eye and to follow the aftercare advice from their surgeon to ensure optimal recovery and reduce the chance of dry eye. This may include using any recommended eye drops, using an eye shield provided while sleeping, taking pain relief medication if needed, using sunglasses outdoors, and following a healthy diet rich in fatty acids and Omega 3-6.

If home remedies are not sufficient to relieve the symptoms, medical treatments such as artificial tear drops may be necessary.  While dry eye after cataract surgery is usually temporary, it’s essential to address the symptoms as soon as possible. Preventive measures for long-term relief include avoiding dry, dusty, or smoky environments, taking regular breaks from looking at screens, protecting the eyes from the sun, keeping the eyes clean, and avoiding anything that could irritate them. Regular follow-up appointments with an eye care specialist are also beneficial for long-term management.

In conclusion, cataract surgery can cause dry eye syndrome, but the symptoms are usually mild and temporary. Following the aftercare advice from the surgeon and taking preventive measures can help manage and relieve the symptoms. If you experience problems with your eyes or develop dry eye after cataract surgery, it’s important to seek medical attention for appropriate management.
