Risks of Laser Cataract Surgery
Laser Cataract surgery was approved by the FDA as safe and effective, but studies published in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery note that the surgery takes longer than traditional surgery and that Laser Incisions seemed to adversely affect the corneal endothelial cells (JCRS 2014 p 1777). In addition there is a significant increase in IOP (pressure) during the suction phase … and Caution should be taken in patients with ocular conditions that are vulnerable to IOP fluctuation (i.e. glaucoma) (JCRS 2014 p 1784).
As with all new technology, the benefits and risks should be weighed carefully.
