## What is Clear Lens Exchange?

Clear lens exchange is a surgical procedure where your eye’s natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens, or IOL. This process is very similar to cataract surgery, but you don’t need to have cataracts to benefit from it.

## The Procedure

Here’s what you can expect during a clear lens exchange:

1. Your eye is numbed with eye drops
2. A small incision is made in the cornea
3. The natural lens is gently broken up and removed
4. A new artificial lens is inserted
5. The incision heals naturally without stitches

The entire process typically takes about 10 minutes per eye.  We generally do one eye at a time for safety, but two eyes can be done with appropriate informed consent and for out of town patients.
