Macular Degeneration and Altzheimer’s Dementia

New studies suggest that there is over a 20% increased risk of Dementia in dry macular degeneration patients.  Screening for macular degeneration may be of benefit to allow early detection of this devastating disease.

Furthermore, new studies suggest an effective treatment for Dementia that may reduce the associated findings of Amyloid plaques in the brain.

It is important to note that the drug, out of Japan, has notable side effects including brain bleeding and swelling.

We have the ability to screen for the often associated condition of Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD, AMD) with a detailed exam and an high resolution Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging test. OCT uses light waves to take cross-section pictures of your retina. With OCT, we can see each of the retina’s distinctive layers. This allows us to document and  map and measure their thickness.
