Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a condition which causes painless, progressive side vision loss. If left untreated, the vision can decrease to “tunnel-like” vision, and in severe cases will lead to blindness. Glaucoma is caused by damage to the optic nerve. Risk factors include but are not limited to elevated eye pressure, positive family history, age, diabetes, thin corneas, myopia and African-American race. It has been shown that by decreasing the eye pressure in the eye, less damage to the optic nerve will occur thus preserving vision. Eye pressure can be decreased with the regular use of pressure lowering eye drops, a laser procedure focused on the drainage system of the eye, or an implant that will increase the outflow of fluid within the eye. Each treatment plan is specific for each patient. Regular visual field tests, eye pressure checks, and optic nerve scans are used to track the progression of glaucoma. If vision loss is seen, more aggressive treatment will be implemented by your eye doctor. Dr. Malitz is a board certified ophthalmologist with a proven track record of 20 years in the successful treatment of Glaucoma. He uses all modalities where appropriate, drops, laser and incisional surgery. He has over 8 years of experience with Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), a proven safe and effective treatment for Glaucoma. It is useful to insure pressure control which is instrumental in preservation of vision.
