Glaucoma is the silent thief of sight. In as many as 50% of patients that have seen an eye doctor within 5 years with definite glaucoma the diagnosis was missed. Only with a detailed examination of the optic nerve can Glaucoma be detected. Glaucoma is more than a disease of high pressure. Some patients with Glaucoma have low pressure, some normal pressure and some with high pressure. A thorough exam consists of a history, comprehensive exam with pressure and a detailed examination of the optic nerve and angle. Other tests as indicated include possibly Retinal Nerve Fiber Analysis, Macular thickness map, Visual Field, Pachymetry, Gonioscopy. It is more than just checking the pressure.
