Glaucoma Surgery in Las Vegas

Although there is really no cure for glaucoma, there are a number of surgical procedures that will reduce or eliminate the need for eye drops.

The simplest are laser procedures.  At Southwest Eye Institute, we offer Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty.    This procedure only takes 5 minutes, is minimally invasive and can reduce or eliminate the need for eye drops or more invasive procedures.

Other surgical procedures are more invasive and include bypass procedures with shunts or openings created in the wall of the eye.  The fluid and pressure that was building up on the optic nerve is diverted to the outside of the eye creating a blister on the surface of the eye.  This can work quite well but sometimes can be uncomfortable and can fail over time.

Look on the top of the eye above the cornea and you will see a blister that was created by an Ahmed Valve or Molteno Shunt.

If your pressure is not controlled with conservative treatment (such as drops) and you are at risk of losing peripheral vision or central vision, you should consider calling for an evaluation for SLT (selective laser trabeculoplasty).
