Corneal Transplant

If your cornea is cloudy, swollen, warped or scarred or simply worn out chances are good you do not see very well. There may be a solution to restore your vision. The procedure is called a corneal transplant. New techniques have been developed to replace the outer layers, inner layers or even the whole cornea. The procedures can be customized for your individual condition. Corneal Transplantation or Penetrating Keratoplasty procedures can be done under local or general anesthesia and are generally covered by insurance. The procedures are quite expensive as the cornea tissue alone is thousands of dollars. The other fees are the surgeon fees for pre operative assessment, surgery and post operative care and for the hospital or surgery center as a facility fee. The corneal transplant procedure takes about an hour and is performed by an eye surgeon. Many surgeons have given up on this procedure as the risk has outstripped the rewards of corneal transplantation. Some surgeons have been left behind the newer technology for DSEK, DMEK, or other techniques. Still some say the “gold standard” is a PKP or Penetrating full thickness corneal transplantation.
