Presbyopia

Around the age of 40-45, we all lose our ability to see at near. This problem is universal.  Presbyopia is caused by the eye’s natural lens growing more rigid and less flexible as we age. Because the lens no longer can expand or contract adequately enough to focus at all distances, blurring can cause problems such as the inability to read fine print, see your cell phone or see your watch.

Specially Designed Presbyopia Bifocal and Trifocal Lenses

No current vision technology offers a perfect solution for this problem, known as presbyopia. Replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial one (intraocular lens or IOL) is an excellent way to enable clear vision at all ranges. Presbyopia correcting IOLs are designed by various methods to give you the best possibility of seeing near, immediate and distance without the aid of glasses.   In fact over 80 percent of patients with the Restor 3.0 in both eyes NEVER wear glasses for any activities!  Now we have the PanOptix and Vivity lenses for enhanced performance and minimized side effects.

Presbyopia Correction with Conductive Keratoplasty (CK)

Another technology that we offer is near vision Conductive Keratoplasty (CK).  By reshaping the cornea the patient retains most of the distance vision and enhances their near vision.   This procedure can be done after LASIK on an off label basis for enhanced near vision for those over 40.   As this effect regresses over time, it has largely been abandoned in favor of more permant options.

Another popular option is correcting one eye (generally the dominant eye) for distance and the other eye (non-dominant eye) for near.
